The Department of Environmental Services currently has a total of 105 side-loader trucks that pick up gray, green and blue trash bins around the island of Oahu.
Each truck averages a lifespan of about seven years, but must undergo significant maintenance and have parts replaced regularly.
The City places an order for around 15 new trucks every year as well as spare parts for emergencies.
According to a news release from the ENV, the COVID-19 pandemic placed ongoing supply chain and manufacturing delays that “are now affecting both the production of new trucks and the availability of replacement parts nationwide.”
Over five years, ENV ordered 73 new trucks but has only received 17 of them, the last truck shipment being delivered in November 2020. Orders for new trucks are currently taking two or more years to arrive to the island.
