LAKELAND — Alyvia Logan wanted to do better at the state meet and despite battling a sore shoulder and elbow, she accomplished that goal. After finishing third and seventh at the state meet in 2023, she finished third and sixth as the top placing girl from Polk County.
The Winter Haven senior was one of two county lifters to medal on Friday along with Lake Gibson senior Alessandra Diaz at the 2024 FHSAA Girls Weightlifting Finals at the RP Funding Center.
For Logan, her day — at least in the Olympic competition — nearly was over before it begun. Competing in the 154-pound weight class, she missed her first two lifts in the snatch and needed a clutch lift on her final attempt.
After missing at 140 pounds then 145 pounds, Logan cleared 145 to stay alive.
“I was really stressed out,” Logan said. “I knew Olympic isn’t my strong suit, but I knew I could do it. The pressure was really bad then I got it and I felt so good.”
Logan then cleared 175 pounds on her first clean and jerk attempt then missed at 185 on her final two attempts to finish with 320 pounds in Olympic. Logan cleared 330 at regionals, but that total still would have left her in sixth place.
