SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Girl Scout Cookie Weekend is upon us, and with sales being down in the birthplace of the organization, troops are hoping for a large turnout.
“When you buy a Girl Scout cookie, you aren’t just getting a tasty treat, you are helping a girl learn business,” said Chelsea Simpson, community engagement manager of Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia.
There are over 12,000 Girl Scouts in the Georgia region, according to Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia, and the organization was founded right here in Savannah.
So why are cookie sales down?
“Here in Savannah, there has been a slight decline in cookie sales compared to our other surrounding areas, but that’s only to say we just started cookie sales last weekend,” she said. “What we are hoping is this weekend as goers of Savannah are out and about, they help boost these girls’ sales and their entrepreneurship by purchasing cookies.”
Entrepreneurship: one of the main principles of the century-old organization.
“All year round, the girls prepare for this by doing different courses and classes and we had a cookie rally where I actually taught them entrepreneurial skills,” said Simpson, “so they learn about money and how to be courageous and talk to strangers to be able to offer a sale and many other leadership skills these are our future leaders of Savannah.”
