(WKBN) — February is National Bird Feeding Month, and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources is offering tips to those who want to attract birds to their yard.
First, ODNR says it is perfectly acceptable to feed birds year-round, contrary to the myth that birds should not be fed in the winter at the risk of interrupting their migration patterns.
The key to consistent bird visits is keeping feeders full on a regular basis — birds will stop returning to an unreliable source of food. ODNR says it is especially important to maintain feeders during times of snow, cold and ice — particularly in the morning and early afternoon when birds feed the heaviest.
The department recommends clearing snow and ice from feeders “with the same thoroughness as you do your sidewalk” so the food is easily accessible.
When it comes to winter feeding, there are numerous options to suit a variety of budgets — and bird species.
ODNR says corn is one of the most inexpensive menu options and can be offered cracked, shelled or on the ear. Cornmeal can also be scattered on a platform feature, but if exposed to the elements it can quickly become moldy.
