Areas of eastern Massachusetts are under a warning for snow squalls that can bring strong winds and difficult travel conditions.
The National Weather Service issued the Snow Squall Warning for Bristol County, Norfolk County, Plymouth County and Suffolk County around 3:15 p.m. lasting until 3:30 p.m.
Bursts of heavy snow are to be expected, along with wind gusts up to 35 miles per hour. Visibility may fall to around a quarter of a mile.
Towns and cities under the warning include Boston, Brockton, Quincy, Pawtucket, Taunton, Weymouth, Woonsocket, Braintree, Cumberland, Randolph, Franklin, North Attleborough, Norwood, Milton, Stoughton, Bridgewater, Marshfield, Attleboro, Dedham, and Walpole.
“Slow Down! Rapid changes in visibility and road conditions are expected with this dangerous snow squall. Be alert for sudden whiteout conditions,” the National Weather Service writes.
Snow squalls are brief, but intense bursts of heavy snow, according to Boston 25 Meteorolgist. Similar to thunderstorms, they develop when the lower atmosphere is unstable. While they typically don’t produce significant accumulation, they can create dangerous conditions for commuters.
