Home fire started by arson spreads next door to church

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Fire Department is currently investigating a home fire that spread next door to a church on Saturday morning in the Medical District.

Shooting near Lamar Avenue leaves man critically injured

MFD says they responded to the fire on Leath Street and Poplar Avenue. The cause of the fire was arson.

The home was reportedly vacant and no one was injured. The church next door, Lake Grove Baptist Church, was also damaged.

A neighbor who has lived across the street for 72 years says she noticed strange activity near the home over the last few months, but she claims when she contacted law enforcement, her concerns were dismissed.

“The last time I called the police he told me if it was not on my property don’t call them,” said Ms. Taylor, the neighbor.

She says the house was burned down about a year ago and no one was currently living there. But recently work was being done on the home.

“They had done so much work and they were doing good work,” Ms. Taylor said. “They would have their whole family working. They even had children over there I watched them step by step build it back up and somebody has ruined their dreams.”
