Commissioner Michelle Long Spears of DeKalb County’s District 2 has announced the ‘State of DeKalb Animals’ address. The event will occur on Wednesday, April 10, at the Historic DeKalb Courthouse in Decatur. The address is part of a series of events addressing animal services challenges in DeKalb County. The SoDA initiative, which focuses on preventing animal abuse and homelessness, aims to improve the county’s animal welfare system.

The SoDA initiative is based on the ‘Common Sense Solutions: Plan for a Better Tomorrow,’ adopted by the DeKalb Board of Commissioners. Commissioner Spears stressed the county’s duty to ensure the welfare of all animals. The initiative plans to use a collaborative approach to tackle animal services challenges.

Dr. Gregory Berns, a professor of neuroeconomics at Emory University, will be the keynote speaker. Dr. Berns, an author of books on animal behavior, emphasized the importance of initiatives like SoDA for promoting animal welfare and responsible pet ownership.
