‘Loyal and dedicated:’ Law enforcement remembers retired NYSP Trooper Tyrrell at funeral

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – A loyal and dedicated member: That’s how fellow law enforcement members are describing Rochester native and retired Trooper Steven Tyrrell.

He died from an illness earlier this month, stemming from search and recovery efforts that he made after the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center.

Both those who worked with Trooper Tyrrell and those who joined after his retirement came together this morning to pay their respects.

“Very soft spoken, well-meaning, likeable gentleman. He was a team player,” Major Scott Field said. “Unfortunately, these 9/11 illnesses that we’ve been stricken with throughout the division and law enforcement in general has taken its toll, but I can tell you that he fought it valiantly.”

Members of New York State Police said Trooper Tyrrell had a storied career, starting in the National Guard, then worked with Capitol Police, and then joined State Police as a Trooper in October of 1997 where he served Troop T – Henrietta for 26 years.

“He was clearly a family man, he’s well regarded. He’s loved. And he certainly will be missed,” NYSP Acting Superintendent Steven G James said.
