California woman died from brutal assault, not hit-and-run car collision, police say

In a shocking turn of events, Modesto Police Department officers were dispatched to the northbound Highway 99 offramp at 6th Street in central Modesto around 8:53 pm on February 16, 2024.

What was initially reported as a possible hit-and-run collision unfolded into a grim discovery – an assault on an adult female victim.

Despite immediate response from law enforcement, the assailants had already fled the scene before officers arrived. The victim, whose identity has not been released, was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries, police said.

The investigation has now been handed over to the detectives from the Modesto Police Department’s violent crimes unit. At this time, the investigation is still in its early stages, and the authorities are working diligently to gather information that may lead to the apprehension of those responsible for this heinous act.

Detective Randy Bolinger, spearheading the investigation, urges anyone with information related to the incident or who may have witnessed the assault to come forward. Det. Bolinger can be reached directly at 209-342-9162.
