The Black Student Union (BSU) is organizing a series of events for Black History Month. Jamar Thomas, a junior and BSU executive board member, described the BSU as a safe space for students of color to discuss issues impacting the Black community. He stressed the importance of celebrating and preserving Black heritage and stated that the BSU welcomes all backgrounds to learn about Black culture.

BSU’s weekly meetings are held every Tuesday from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in room B12 in SAO. The focus this semester is on understanding African-American community relations. Thomas revealed that several events are planned for Black History Month to educate and entertain the campus community.

So far, the BSU has hosted an African Inspired Art night and a Hair Care Fair. Thomas said the Hair Care Fair, which educates attendees about diverse hair types, is a popular event.

More events are planned for the rest of Black History Month, including African Cuisine Night, Soul Food Sunday, Black Movie Night, and Quilt Making Night. Thomas invited everyone to attend these events. The BSU will also host a special guest, Milwaukee-based rapper Emmitt James.
