NMSP was called to the home of Darlene Gonzales on January 11, 2024, for a wellness check. The caller told them that she had given birth at home the day prior. When officers arrived, they asked Gonzales if she had taken the baby to receive medical care. She told them he hadn’t. Officers asked to enter the home, and Gonzales and her husband, Ronald Martinez allowed them to enter.

On police lapel video, officers could see the home in a state of disarray with trash piled up around the home. According to Gonzales, she had given birth to the baby on the couch. According to police, when they asked Gozales where the baby slept, Martinez and Gonzales both said the baby slept on the couch.
