Buchanan High wrestling coach Troy Tirapelle admits his team didn’t have the “greatest last round” they ever had, but it was still good enough.
The Bears captured the Central Section Masters Saturday with 387.5 points and will look ahead to defending their CIF state championships. The Bears had seven winners in the championship round.
Clovis High was second with 296.5 points and had three champions in the Masters.
The CIF state championships will be held in Bakersfield on Feb. 23-24.
Tirapelle felt this win will help his team heading into the state championships even though he’s OK going into the meet as underdogs behind Poway, which beat the Bears recently at Fresno City College.
“We’re going for the state championship,” he said. “It’s truly going to take everyone doing their job to do it.”
Buchanan has won seven consecutive titles.
Girls: Pioneer Valley wins; Selma second
Selma High finished second behind Pioneer Valley.
The Bears had 94 points, but Pioneer Valley won with a comfortable 114 points.
