Black Restaurant Week San Antonio (BRWSA) is a yearly event that supports Black-owned restaurants and food businesses in San Antonio. The event, scheduled for February 25 to March 3, 2024, is in its sixth year. It encourages people to experience the diverse flavors of the city’s Black culinary scene. The event also recognizes long-standing restaurants, especially those that have survived the pandemic.
BRWSA is dedicated to promoting diversity and supporting local businesses. It also works with the San Antonio Food Bank to help those in need. For each BRWSA Special sold, $1 is donated to the food bank. So far, BRWSA has raised about $30,000 for this purpose.
BRWSA was first organized by Ryane Smith in 2019. Smith saw that many excellent Black-owned food businesses in San Antonio were not getting enough attention. The first event had nine businesses, and now up to 42 businesses and culinary professionals participate.
BRWSA highlights the variety of Black cuisine, not just soul food. It showcases the different cultures and unique dishes of these cuisines. This year’s events include a Garden Day and Farmer’s Jubilee. A full list of participating restaurants is available for those who want to support and explore the community’s culinary scene.
