HENDERSON, Ky (WEHT) – A man is in jail after Evansville Police say he had an improvised explosive device was found that would act like a grenade if it went off.

EPD states officers were patrolling on S. Kentucky Avenue on February 14 when a check of a pickup truck’s license plate was supposed to be on a different truck. A traffic stop was initiated, and the driver, identified as Randal Burkhart, 56, said he did not have a driver’s license, registration or proof of insurance.

Burkhart allegedly gave consent to a search after being told to get out of the truck. A check of the center console revealed a suspicious item. EPD says it looked to be a shotgun shell wrapped in blue and silver tape with a screw sticking out of the primer.

The Hazardous Devices Unit was called, and they say it looked to be an improvised grenade complete with two bolts taped around the device where the bolts would act like shrapnel if the device were to go off. Officials also stated the device functioned by throwing it in the same manner as a hand grenade.
