WILLIS — Airport’s competitive cheerleading team got the state tournament off to a roaring start by winning the Division 2 District at Ypsilanti Lincoln on Saturday.
The Jets finished ahead of defending state champion Gibraltar Carlson.
“It was awesome,” Airport coach Emily Dusik said. “The girls came out really strong in Round 1. They did everything they had to do.”
The third round was even more impressive.
“The girls had more passion than I’ve ever seen,” Dusik said.
It took that to finish ahead of Carlson.
“That was pretty cool,” Dusik said. “Carlson always has three wonderful rounds.”
It was the first district championship in school history for Airport.
Airport scored 230.9 in the first round, 223.48 in the second and won the third round with 316.2 for a total of 770.58,
Carlson was second with 768.88.
Airport and Carlson move on to the regional at Fenton Saturday.
New Boston Huron finished seventh with 680.68.
