The biggest, littlest store in town

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A family-owned grocery store in Sioux Falls is celebrating 75 years in business. Franklin Food Market has a few ingredients to success.

Photos on the wall at Franklin Food Market show how the family-owned store got its start.

“We’ve been here a long time and a lot of places have come and gone,” Haggar said.

Ted Haggar’s grandfather, dad and uncles started Franklin Food Market in 1949, thanks to a G.I. loan his uncle received after getting out of the service. The family initially opened up shop on a corner that’s currently home to a Laundromat on Cliff Avenue.

About 10 years later, they built their current location, near the former store.

Nestled in the Whittier neighborhood, Franklin Food Market is a staple in the area.

“We’re kind of what we call the meet and potato store. My father always referred to us as the biggest, littlest store in town,” Haggar said.

Cindy Kenyon started coming to this store as a four-year-old girl to buy candy for a penny. Today, she and her husband are loyal customers.
