Two dead after stolen vehicle pursuit ends with crash in Lockport

Lockport, N.Y. (WBEN) – Two people are dead in Lockport after speeding away from police during a traffic stop, resulting in a pursuit that ended when the vehicle crashed into a tree.

Just before 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon a Niagara County Sheriff deputy pulled over a vehicle on Chestnut Ridge Road that an in-car license plate reader identified as stolen.

While talking with the driver, the car took off down Chestnut Ridge Road in Lockport. The deputy gave chase but then backed off when the speeds got too high. The officer watched in the distance as the car lost control and hit a tree.

There were two people in the vehicle and emergency response officials declared both deceased on the scene.

The incident remains under investigation by the Niagara County Sheriff;s Office and Lockport Police, in conjunction with the New York State Attorney General’s Office, as is required.
