More snow incoming for California Mountain snow lab, but not the ‘Sierra Cement’ variety

The U.C. Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab has recorded 7.5 inches of snow in its latest 8 a.m. measurement, signaling the onset of a significant snowfall event in the region.

Current conditions, described as relatively warm with mostly cloudy skies, set the stage for an anticipated 18-30 inches of additional snow through Wednesday afternoon.

As winter weather takes hold in the Central Sierra, the recent measurement at the U.C. Berkeley Snow Lab underscores the beginning of a substantial snowfall period. The current snow depth, combined with the impending forecast, suggests that the region is in for a substantial accumulation.

“We had 7.5″ of #snow at this morning’s 8 am measurement. Current conditions are relatively warm with mostly cloudy skies,” the Snow Lab reported on their official channels. The mention of “relatively warm” conditions indicates that the snowfall is likely to be of the denser variety known as Sierra Cement.

Forecasters at the Snow Lab are predicting an additional 18-30 inches of snowfall by Wednesday afternoon. The warmer temperatures accompanying this weather system are expected to contribute to the formation of Sierra Cement, characterized by its higher water content and greater density.
