Shuttered library in crime-filled California city allowed to reopen – but with armed security guards

Late Saturday, the Contra Costa County Library announced the imminent reopening of its Antioch Library location following a temporary closure prompted by a surge in dangerous incidents. The decision to reopen comes after the library secured an emergency contract to deploy armed security guards.

The Antioch Library, which temporarily shuttered its doors on February 16 due to escalating safety concerns, will resume regular hours of operation on Tuesday, February 20, 2024. The Contra Costa County Library cited a series of alarming incidents over the past few months, posing threats to the safety and security of both patrons and staff, as the reason for the closure.

In response to the escalating situation, the Library, in collaboration with the County Administrator’s Office and County Counsel, successfully negotiated an emergency contract. This contract allows for the deployment of private armed security guards and patrol cars to monitor the library property and parking lot. Additionally, the Library already maintains a private security officer within the branch during all open hours.
