California Highway Patrol Reminds Drivers: Front Window Tinting is Illegal and Unsafe

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) Santa Cruz has issued an important reminder for drivers about the legal and safety implications of window tinting on front windshields and front side windows. While tinted windows may seem appealing for privacy and reducing glare, they are illegal and can pose significant safety hazards, the CHP stated.

In California, it is illegal to have tinted windows on the front windshield and front side windows of your vehicle, according to the CHP.

This law is detailed in section 26708.2(a) of the California Vehicle Code. Even with a doctor’s note, permanent tint on these windows is prohibited. Drivers who need to reduce glare for medical reasons may use a temporary shade, but it must be easily removable to comply with the law.

Tinted windows can significantly reduce visibility for drivers, especially at night. This reduction in visibility can make it difficult for drivers to see other vehicles, pedestrians, and obstacles, increasing the risk of accidents. Moreover, in the event of a crash, tinted windows can make it challenging for occupants to escape or for rescuers to reach them, potentially leading to more severe outcomes.
