Stockton’s last Big Lots location on Country Club Boulevard prepares to close for good

Big Lots is offering up to 20% off on select merchandise at its only Stockton location, 2720 Country Club Blvd., as the store prepares to close its doors for good.

The Ohio-based company is closing 54 of its 109 locations in California, as well as other locations across the nation, by the end of 2024.

Other Big Lots locations closing in San Joaquin County in 2024 include 1321 W. Yosemite Ave. in Manteca and 2681 N. Tracy Blvd. in Tracy.

Store closures come after Big Lots reported a net loss of $205 million for the first quarter of its fiscal year, which ended on May 4.

Net sales for the first quarter of its 2024 fiscal year totaled $1.009 billion, a 10.2% decrease compared to $1.124 billion for the same period last year, according to data released by Big Lots.

The company blamed the recent drop in sales on a “challenging consumer environment.”

“While we made substantial progress on improving our business operations in Q1, we missed our sales goals due largely to a continued pullback in consumer spending by our core customers, particularly in high-ticket discretionary items,” said Bruce Thorn, president and CEO of Big Lots, in June. “We remain focused on managing through the current economic cycle by controlling the controllables. As we move forward, we’re taking aggressive actions to drive positive comp sales growth in the latter part of the year and into 2025, and to maintain year-over-year gross margin rate improvements.”
