25 kayakers rescued from Kalamazoo River near Otsego, deputies say

OTSEGO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Twenty-one children and four adults were rescued from the Kalamazoo River after their kayaks flipped over Thursday afternoon, deputies say.

Around 3 p.m., dispatch got a call that kayakers who had launched from a local business on a group outing and “ran into some trouble.” Multiple kayakers’ boats had turned over, the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies found the kayakers west of Otsego on the Kalamazoo River. All 25 people made it out of the water with no injuries.

“A significant contributing factor to this successful rescue was the fact that all participants were wearing their personal floatation devices,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a news release.
