Wichita breaking crew excited for Olympic breakdancing debut

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Breaking has been added to the Olympics this year, and local groups say this is a great opportunity for people to spark interest in the sport.

“It definitely takes everything to a higher level than it has been before because there’s definitely gonna be a lot more people break dancing and a lot more new styles and things to keep up with,” breaker Luis Grossi said.

Grossi has been breaking since he was 12 after becoming interested through “America’s Best Dance Crew” on MTV. He says breaking is a high-level sport, but anyone can do it.

“It was a sense of relief, recognition that this is something that has taken over, and it’s being recognized because not only the people that do it but how athletic they truly are and what it takes to be at that high level,” Grossi said. “It’s such a common thing that doesn’t get enough recognition. So when we’re included, we really take it up a notch for ourselves.”
