BIRMINGHAM, Ala (WIAT) – The Remy Fund for Pets and Animal Services at the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham has announced its 2024 grants. This year, a total of $69,200 has been awarded to eleven companion animal organizations– organizations that provide services for dogs, cats and horses.
The Remy Fund was established in 2011 by philanthropist Ken Jackson in memory of his late dog, Remy. Since its establishment, it has awarded over $649,000 to companion animal organizations in the Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Blount and Walker counties.
The fund is supported by multiple donors, including the Diane and Warren Ferguson Fund for Animals, the Jean K. Forman Fund for Animal Welfare and the Anne Knight Townsend Fund for the Welfare of Animals.
Local animal shelters and cat owners question Birmingham’s animal control efforts
This year, the organizations awarded grants include the following:
- Alabama Spay/Neuter , $10,000
- For the Remy SNIP program, which provides low cost spay/neuter surgeries.
- KatDaddle, Inc ., $10,000
- For the continued care of rescued and outdoor colony cats.
- Kitty Kat Haven , $10,000
- To support the veterinary costs of the cats and kittens served by KKH.
- Walker County Humane Society , $10,000
- To provide local spay and neuter resources.
- Bama Bully Rescue , $7,500
- To provide services for bully breeds, and to support local dogs belonging to low-income owners.
- Hand in Paw, Inc. , $5,000
- For the Wags for Wellness program, which benefits healthcare workers and first responders.
- Sugarbelle Foundation , $5,000
- To provide resources to pet owners in need, and for spay/neuter services.
- Special Equestrians , $4,700
- To provide care for horses in the Special Equestrians therapy program.
- The Country Cattery , $2,500
- To support costs for the animals in care, and to feed feral colonies.
- Rescuers United for Furbabies (RUFF) , $2,500
- For the purchase of a new AC unit for their transport van.
- Birmingham AIDS Outreach (BAO) , $2,000
- For the Pets Are Wonderful Support (PAWS) program.
