From ‘too Russian’ to ‘way better!’: Oklahomans react harshly to new license plate design

This week the state of Oklahoma rolled out a new standard license plate design , and residents showed up in the comments on social media.

The plate is red with a star-46 design in the center, which evokes the design of Oklahoma’s first state flag. The design also features small images of state landmarks and the state marketing tagline, “Imagine That.”

Opinions ranged from positive to aggressively negative.

Some folks view the new design as a cool throwback to the state’s founding history, while others merely consider it a step up from “mental institution blue,” as one commenter suggested.

Critics were quick to point out the design’s similarities to negatively viewed places and groups, such as Russia, Communists, Texas and the University of Oklahoma’s Crimson and Cream. “I’ll get it when it comes in orange,” one Oklahoma State University fan commented.
