Don’s Place closes, owner cites long commute from Va.

Don’s Place, a discount tool and scooter outlet that’s been a fixture in Elizabeth City for nearly two decades, has closed its doors for good.

According to owner Norman Shultz, July 31 was the last day for the business at 603 W. Ehringhaus Street he purchased from founder Don Holman in 2007.

“I work all of the time and I’m tired of it,” Shultz said.

Shultz is co-owner of Petersburg Trading, a wholesale and retail tool business in Petersburg, Virginia. Shultz said he had done business with Holman since Don’s Place first opened in 2005. He decided to buy the business from Holman two years later.

Shultz said Don’s Place is doing fine but at 61, he’s tired of making the drive from Virginia to Elizabeth City several times a week. He said he’s ready for a change.

While Shultz was busy dismantling shelving in the back room of the shop on Tuesday, customers were milling around looking for deals. Shultz said customers have told him they were sorry to see the business close, but understood his reasons for shutting the doors.
