Richmond School Board to meet to discuss solutions to bus driver overtime pay issues

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — On Monday night, the Richmond School Board will meet to explore possible solutions to the district’s ongoing bus driver overtime pay problems.

This problem all started after a 24-page report drafted by Doug Graeff, Richmond Public Schools’ Director of Internal Auditing, revealed the school district’s bus drivers will get an estimated $1.8 million in overtime pay just in 2024.

The report also found issues with drivers clocking in and out for shifts, being paid for eight hours despite working less and afterschool shifts automatically paying two hours of overtime even if drivers worked fewer hours. Multiple drivers have been claiming overtime pay before completing their required 40 hours.

The possible solutions the Richmond School Board will be discussing tonight will range from altering policies to only pay bus drivers overtime if they work more than 40 hours to keeping the system the same as it is now. The expense each option will cost will also be discussed, ranked below from least to most.
