TN governor to reintroduce school vouchers proposal despite detractors

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Governor Bill Lee is ramping up talk about his school voucher proposal. The program would provide public money for private schools to thousands of Tennessee students. State lawmakers voted it down last session.

The governor immediately said he’d bring it back next session, which starts in January. To find out more about school vouchers, 6 News talked with the governor, a respected educator and an East Tennessee mother. The three don’t agree on the value of the voucher.

At Community Evangelistic Church in East Knoxville, the Kasinga children, five brothers and sisters, are supplementing their summer learning with the help of Laschinski Emerson. She founded the tutoring non-profit A1 Learning Connections and uses space at the church for some of her sessions. Emerson sees 250 students a year.

“It’s a passion for me,” Emerson said. “It is a ministry for me, and I want to see all of our families to be able to be successful, to be productive, to be constructive citizens.”
