State Supt. Walters says he wants to track impacts of illegal immigration on Oklahoma schools

GREEN COUNTRY, Okla. — State Superintendent Ryan Walters said he wants to track the impacts of illegal immigration on Oklahoma schools.

Walters made this announcement at the State Board of Education meeting last Wednesday, Since then, school districts still have unanswered questions and some are concerned it could go against federal law.

“What we will be doing in the upcoming weeks, is issuing guidance to districts where they will be helping us to find accurate and effective counting of the cost and burden that illegal immigration has not only on their school but the taxpayers in the state of Oklahoma,” said Walters during the latest State Board of Education meeting. “It’s incredibly hard to know how much illegal immigration schools are dealing with financial impact. How do schools plan whether its personnel, resources, how do they do this.”

Since that meeting, FOX23 reached out to dozens of school districts within Green Country.

Almost all of them said they have not received guidance from the OSDE on this announcement from Walters so they’re unsure what action they will need to take.
