Community invited to funeral for unclaimed veteran

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The community is being invited to help lay a veteran to rest who died without any family to claim him.

Stephen J. Morrison died July 7 in Wichita at the age of 65. A spokesperson for Dignity Memorial says Morrison had no living relatives, and his body went unclaimed after his death.

Born on Oct. 23, 1958, Morrison served in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged in 1977. He will be laid to rest Wednesday following a memorial service at Resthaven Cemetery.

Following the service, a procession led by American Legion Riders from Mulvane will help escort Morrison to Kansas Veterans Cemetery in Winfield, where he will be laid to rest with full military honors. The service is being made possible through Dignity Memorial’s Homeless Veterans Burial Program.

“The Dignity Memorial Homeless Veterans Burial Program is a cooperative effort designed to ensure that veterans who are homeless, indigent, and have no family receive the honors in death that their service in life merited,” said Travis Kegley of Resthaven Mortuary. “We’re honored to assist in giving Mr. Morrison the dignified military services and final salute he deserves.”
