Woman sentenced for attempted robbery, shooting at Coronado Center

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A woman who tried to steal a car from a pair of sisters last year, before shooting one of them and taking off, was sentenced for her crime on Monday. Laura Tapia tried to steal the siblings’ car in the Coronado Center parking lot in June 2023.

One of them got out and told Tapia she wouldn’t be stealing their car. That’s when Tapia shot her and ran off, only to be caught a short time later.

She pled guilty to aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and attempted armed robbery. “Apart from the fact that you would have killed somebody and if you can imagine guilty, imagine that level of guilt weighing on you for the rest of your life. And having people feel about you, hating your existence cause you took away one of their loved ones. It happens every day,” said Judge Brett Loveless.

Tapia was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison.
