On Tuesday, Whitmire told Houston Public Media a legislative change would need to be made to allow younger recruits to bear firearms during training at the police academy. In an effort to address the Houston Police Department’s lingering staffing shortages, Mayor John Whitmire said he believes state lawmakers will overwhelmingly support legislation to lower the age requirement for younger police recruits to bear firearms.
