Lowcountry Zoo at Brookgreen Gardens welcomes baby goats ahead of Debby’s big arrival

MURRELLS INLET, S.C. (WBTW) — Tropical Storm Debby is expected to stall near the coastal border over the next few days with heavy rain, flooding many areas including the Lowcountry Zoo at Brookgreen Gardens.

News 13 last reported on Brookgreen Gardens in May on their plans ahead of hurricane season, and this week their preparation plans are being put to use.

Andrea DeMuth, the zoo’s vice president and curator, said storm preparation took place Monday as workers tidied up areas and collected loose items.

On Tuesday, animals such as red wolves and otters were round up and secured in their individual buildings.

“If a tree falls on an exhibit and we left them out in the exhibit, they could crawl right up the tree and be out so, we want to make sure everybody’s for and that they’re safe too.”

DeMuth says rounding up the animals took all six zookeepers and a couple of hours.

She says during a pop-up storm just months ago, mesh was ripped off the top of the butterfly exhibit and the butterflies got out.
