Sarasota residents question if ‘development boom’ out east impacted severity of flooding

SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA) — More than two days after flood waters forced countless families across Sarasota County out of their homes, water in some areas has yet to recede.

Some communities that do not fall within flood zones experienced significant impacts.

Sarasota County neighborhood still suffering with flood water, wondering when help will come

“A lot of us don’t have flood insurance,” said Luis Deulofeu in the Laurel Meadows neighborhood. “This is not a flood zone.”

Residents across the area was asking why the issue is impacting so many. Some think the changing landscape out east is part of the problem.

“I have never seen flooding this bad in the 35 years that I’ve lived here,” longtime resident Ron Puleo said. “When I bought back here, it used to be farmland around us and then they just kept building and building, and the more they built, the more water we got back into this area.”

Puleo lives in the Country Wood Estates community, which sits east of Interstate 75 and south of Fruitville Road. His neighborhood has seen flooding over the years but never to this extent.
