US Highway 34 reopens in area of Alexander Mountain Fire west of Loveland

Update, 5:30 p.m. Aug. 7: The Alexander Mountain Fire reached 91% containment Wednesday night and remained at 9,668 acres, according to Inciweb .

Original: U.S. Highway 34 completely reopened Wednesday morning in the area of the Alexander Mountain Fire.

Evacuation orders along U.S. 34 from the Dam Store to Drake have also been lifted.

Mandatory evacuations for the Storm Mountain and Cedar Park areas were downgraded to voluntary Wednesday morning. Only credentialed residents will be able to enter those areas.

The only road block still in place is at Larimer County Road 43 and Storm Mountain Drive.

Fire activity remained slow and minimal Wednesday morning. Firefighters continue to focus on increasing containment by reinforcing control lines, mopping up and “returning disturbed areas to a more natural state,” according to a news release from the U.S. Forest Service.

The fire size and containment didn’t change overnight. It remains at 9,668 acres and 83% contained.

Firefighters are continuing to patrol the areas where residents are returning to their homes to put out any remaining hot spots near homes. Power companies are also working to restore electricity Wednesday morning.
