Most of southern Michigan, including Lenawee County, gearing up for U.S. 12 garage sales

This weekend, traffic will be unusually heavy along the 200-mile U.S. 12 route from Detroit to New Buffalo for the annual U.S. 12 Heritage Trail Garage Sale , which begins Friday, Aug. 9 and continues through the weekend until Sunday, Aug. 11.

“Michiganders can travel on U.S. 12 for over 210 miles without leaving the state, but this stretch is only a small part of this massive highway,” said Sharon Scott with the Historical Society of Clinton . “In its entirety, the road runs from Aberdeen, Washington, to Detroit, covering a distance of nearly 2,500 miles.

U.S. 12 garage sales can be found along the highway at homes, farms, businesses, parking lots and fields. U.S. 12 in Michigan encompasses the counties of Wayne Washtenaw, Lenawee, Hillsdale, Branch, St. Joseph, Cass and Berrien. Some areas will have many vendors while others may be scattered, Scott said.

“As you drive the country roads on your quest, you will be privy to incredible stories,” she said.

Officially, the U.S. 12 Heritage Trail Garage Sale is known as “Michigan’s Longest Garage Sale.” It has been held annually since 2003 and always falls on the second weekend of August as a three-day event that promises everything from antiques, collectibles, furniture, dishware, fresh garden produce, homemade jams and jellies, live entertainment and more.
