City of Albuquerque grant program looks to help businesses combat crime

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – In an effort to fight crime in downtown Albuquerque, the city is launching a program to keep a closer eye on the streets. The new program will install a new layer of security cameras for businesses. “We all spend a lot of money fixing broken glass and graffiti,” says Dawn Vatoseow, Co-owner of Lindy’s restaurant.

It’s a problem businesses along Central Ave. said they’re tired of dealing with. Broken windows and doors cost them hundreds in repairs. “If you get one of your larger windows or your door broken out, you’re looking at anywhere from $500-$700,” said Vatoseow.

Dawn Vatoseow is the co-owner of Lindy’s Diner. She said they have broken windows or break-ins almost every two months. But now, the Metropolitan Redevelopment Agency and the Albuquerque Police Department are partnering to create a new grant program to fight crimes like these.
