Colorado awarded $1.5 million in grants for bridges

(COLORADO) — The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) announced $1.5 million in planning grants to Colorado through the Federal Highway Administration’s Bridge Investment Program.

Colorado is receiving grants for three projects across the state; Highway 96 in Pueblo, Academy Boulevard bridge in Colorado Springs, and Larimer County Road 63E over the Cache la Poudre River.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is getting $760,000 for planning efforts to determine the feasibility of replacing two bridges on Hwy 96. DOT said the bridges are a critical connection for disadvantaged communities in East Pueblo to Pueblo’s downtown.

The City of Colorado Springs is getting $750,000 to conduct a study to develop plans for the replacement of the North Academy Boulevard Bridge over East Platte Avenue along with multimodal improvements.

Larimer County is getting $64,000 to determine the specifics of replacing a more than 80-year-old bridge on Larimer County Road 63E.

“The planning grants announced today will help Colorado prepare critical bridge projects for restoration or replacement before they fall into a state of disrepair,” said Federal Highway Administrator Shailen Bhatt. “By making historic investments in bridge projects that serve as a vital transportation link in communities nationwide, the Biden-Harris administration is supporting local economies, strengthening supply chains, and promoting resilience and safety in transportation.”
