Judge decides punishment for ex-Marion County deputy who struck and killed bicyclist

A judge has suspended the driver’s license of a former Marion County sheriff’s deputy for six months, fined him $1,000 and ordered him to complete a 12-hour driver’s improvement course as punishment for a crash late last year that killed a bicycle rider.

County Judge Tommy Thompson imposed the punishment after Brandon Neal Kumar Jaglal entered a no contest plea to a traffic infraction: fail to use due care toward pedestrian.

Jaglal, who was represented by local defense lawyer Jimmie Sparrow, appeared at the Marion County Judicial Center on Aug. 5.

Records show Jaglal has resigned as a deputy sheriff. In his brief letter to Sheriff Billy Woods, Jaglal wrote: “I would like to inform you that I am resigning from my position of Deputy Sheriff for the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. My last day will be Friday, July 12, 2024.” He ended with “I would like to thank you for the opportunities I have had with this organization.”

Internal affairs investigation after fatal crash

An internal affairs report into the crash found that Jaglal violated two of the agency’s directives.
