Coastal Carolina’s Melissa Jefferson grabs gold as U.S. takes 4×100 relay

SAINT-DENIS, France (AP/WBTW) — Georgetown County native and Coastal Carolina University track star Melissa Jefferson and her U.S. teammates captured gold Friday in the 4×100 relay in Paris.

It was the second medal of the Paris games for Jefferson , who attended Carvers Bay High School. The former NCAA national champion won a bronze medal in the 100 meters, going the distance in 10.92 seconds.

Jefferson opened the event for Team USA with a split of 11.46, the third-fastest opening leg in the field.

Teammate Sha’Carri Richardson brought the Americans from behind in the anchor lap to capture the win on Friday. The 100-meter silver medalist, overcame runners from Britain and Germany, to help the U.S. finish in 41.78 seconds, good for a .07-second win over Britain, which struggled with two baton changes in the rain.

Gabby Thomas ran the third leg and got her second gold of the Games, this one going with the 200-meter title. Twanisha Terry and 100 bronze medalist Melissa Jefferson rounded out the team. The exchange between Terry and Thomas that nearly wrecked the Americans in qualifying was better this time.
