BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — In this week’s installment Maddie learns the in’s and out’s of hurdling.

Hurdling is one of the iconic and most fun races to watch at the Olympics.

Owner of A3 Sports Performance, Ryan Beckwith and Bakersfield Hurdler, Reagan Cole, show Maddie some mobility exercises hurdler’s use to get ready. Beckwith and Cole also demonstrated the basics of learning how to hurdle.

“I think most people don’t realize…the men in the 110 meter hurdles run 42 inches, the women run 33 inches,” Beckwith said during the segment.

Most athletes and beginners don’t have hurdles at home. You can substitute hurdles with a chair, box or make some out of PVC pipes. The first exercise focuses on rotation of the hip, which requires “pulling the knee through the armpit.”
