Northern Nevada Forecast: Dry Air to help cool temperatures overnight, skies to remain smoky

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued an area forecast discussion for the weekend of August 10, 2024. Expect warm temperatures to continue, with minor to moderate heat risks in lower elevations. Although the dry air will help cool temperatures at night, smoke and haze from the Park and Crozier fires on the Sierra west slopes may affect areas like Reno, Tahoe, Truckee, and Susanville.

Increased breezes are expected on Sunday and Monday, raising concerns about fire weather. Wind gusts could reach over 35 mph in certain areas, with a 20% chance of gusts exceeding 45 mph along Highway 95 on Monday, which could impact road travel and create dust hazards.

Looking ahead to next week, temperatures are expected to be seasonable with mostly dry weather. Nights will see cooler temperatures, with 50s in Western Nevada cities and 30s in Sierra communities. While isolated thunderstorms are possible the following weekend, confidence in this forecast is currently low.
