Meet Elliott Deins, the Statesman Journal’s new outdoors intern

Elliott Deins is the Statesman Journal’s new outdoors journalism intern.

Deins will cover outdoor recreation, public lands, wildfires and other outdoor issues during a 16-week internship that began earlier this summer.

He is a U.S. Navy veteran from St. Peterburg, Florida, who graduated from the University of Oregon in June with a degree in journalism.

“It’s an awesome opportunity to pursue my passion for the Oregon outdoors while continuing to hone my craft under high-level reporters and editors,” Deins said.

In the last three years, Deins has written and photographed Oregon Ducks sports, Professional Bull Riding, the 2022 track and field World Championships and worked as a media intern with the U.S. Forest Service in Cordova, Alaska.

Since starting in July, Deins has covered the wildfire season extensively, including going on the line of backburn operations at the Chalk Fire. He went on remote hikes on the Oregon coast, covered the Ironman 70.3 Oregon in Salem and detailed closures in Willamette National Forest due to previous and active fires.
