Everyone can make a difference by reading to a child OKCPS Superintendent Jamie Polk

The first day of school. Even in my 36th year as an educator, it still gives me butterflies. Aug. 13 will be here before we know it, bringing a brand-new year full of hope and possibilities, and Team OKCPS can’t wait to welcome our students back!

It’s certainly been a busy summer, but this week I took a short break from budget talks and bus routes, school calendars and enrollment, test scores and new employee orientation, and found myself nestled in a cozy corner of the library at Eugene Field Elementary School reading “A Letter From Your Teacher” by Shannon Olsen.

It’s a wonderful children’s book designed to help prepare students for back to school by giving them a glimpse of the realities that are to come while also reassuring them that their teacher and classmates will be there to support and encourage them every step of the way. I love that it is filled with beautiful illustrations that mirror the unique diversity that makes Oklahoma City Public Schools so special.
