Reminder to call 811 before digging into the ground on National Digging Day

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Today is known as national safe digging day. Aug. 11 or 8/11 is a reminder to people to practice safe digging.

If you are planning on digging, dial 8-1-1 to see what is underneath. Call or go online three days in advance for a free check to see if where you want to dig is safe.

“The customer, you know, did this damage called Virginia natural gas,” said Morgan Chase, spokesperson for Virginia Natural Gas. “We come out, we turn it off at the meter, we go in and we repair the line. Honestly, the biggest challenge in this situation is an inconvenience for all your neighbors. You don’t want to be the one who is the reason that, you know, half of your street doesn’t have that gas stove.”
