BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — A homicide investigation is underway on 1st Avenue North Monday morning in Birmingham.
According to Birmingham police, officers arrived at the Anchor Motel in the 8400 block of First Avenue North around 9:30 a.m. on reports of a person shot. When officers arrived on the scene, they observed an adult male lying in the parking lot unresponsive, suffering from a gunshot wound.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived on the scene and transported the victim to UAB Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The preliminary investigation suggests a physical altercation occurred between the victim and an unknown suspect in the parking lot of the Anchor Motel. The suspect then fired shots which struck the victim, and left the scene in an unknown vehicle. A witness attempted life-saving measures before BFRS arrived. A suspect is currently in custody.
