Orange Beach man sentenced for killing Mount Vernon police officer in drunk driving crash

BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. ( WKRG ) — An Orange Beach man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison in the drunk driving crash that killed Mount Vernon police officer Ivan Lopez in August 2022.

33-year-old Tyler Henderson entered a plea of guilty to manslaughter on Monday morning.

Prosecutors said Henderson’s blood alcohol level was almost three times the legal limit when he ran a stop sign at the intersection of County Road 36 and Highway 59 in Summerdale, colliding with Lopez’s police cruiser.

Lopez was killed instantly.

A passenger in Henderson’s truck was also injured in the crash.

Henderson was originally charged with murder.
