Myrtle Beach International Airport cuts ties with rideshare company to free up parking

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Myrtle Beach International Airport is severing ties with car-share company Turo in a move that officials say will add hundreds of more parking spaces for visitors.

But a driver for the business says the decision will have economic consequences.

“We’re going to lose a lot of business over this, and it’s a paper-thin margin as far as our earnings go,” Turo host Matthew McCarty said. “We have so much overhead that one little thing could be enough to put us out of business.”

Airport spokesman Ryan Bechter told News13 earlier this month that the sides have been in talks since December but negotiations stalled after Turo was “unwilling to move forward in good faith.”

News13 reached out for details about the airport’s relationship with Turo, but hasn’t heard back.

Turo has formal deals in place with airports around the state including Charleston, Columbia, Greenville-Spartanburg and Hilton Head Island, according to its website. A company representative was not immediately available for comment on Friday.
