Two Portsmouth police officers injured in hit-and-run

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Two Portsmouth police officers were hit by a vehicle early Sunday morning.

It happened just after 2 a.m. on the 4040 block of Missy Elliott Boulevard. Both officers were hurt and one of the officers was rushed to a local hospital. Some pedestrians were hit, but officers said they left the scene so they were not identified.

The driver of the vehicle fled the scene, but police later stopped the driver on the interstate. The suspect was arrested Sunday morning and charged with DUI and maiming.

One woman told 10 On Your Side she was one of the pedestrians who was hit.

She declined to show her face or reveal her name, but said it all started with a group of people gathering in a parking lot.

“It was a lot of crowds and a lot of commotion. So, I was just standing with my sister and my brother and then the next thing I know it was like, boom and I hit the ground,” she said.

She said a woman put her car in reverse and hit a crowd of people.

“I got up and I noticed it was an officer right beside me. It was a black officer, and she was gasping for air.”
