‘Kind of like an iceberg’: Underwater debris causes dangerous hazard to boaters after Debby

MURRELLS INLET, S.C. (WBTW) — As Tropical Storm Debby pushed through the Carolinas, debris from the north is now making its way down the Waccamaw River, sitting in a bottle neck location by Waca Wache Marina.

Marina staff say they have seen debris upwards of 40 feet long floating atop the water, but that even more dangerous hazards lie beneath the surface.

Dan Richardson said that because the visibility is so clouded, there’s really no telling just how bad it is. He said seeing the debris over the past week floating down the river leaves him to believe there’s even more under the boats.

Richardson said tree stumps, branches, logs and marsh grass have all been things that they’ve seen floating. Although Monday wasn’t as bad as days past, he and his staff are still cautious.

“It’s kind of like an iceberg. You’ll see a little piece sticking up there and you get up closer and you suddenly see a very large log, a piece of a tree or something that’s down,” he said. “So, it’s quite a hazardous situation.”
